A Fireflies alternative without a bot or audio recording
CaptionSnap saves the captions Teams, Zoom or Google Meet already show, as a transcript on your Mac with each speaker's name and time. No bot joins the call and no audio is recorded.
What Fireflies does well
- AI notes after every meeting. Fireflies gives you “detailed notes, action items, and customized summaries instantly after every meeting” (fireflies.ai).
- Desktop, Chrome and phone apps. It connects to Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, with a desktop app, a Chrome extension and a mobile app for conversations in person (fireflies.ai, pricing).
- Notes sent to your other tools. Notes go to Slack, HubSpot, Salesforce, Notion and “100+ other tools”, and it fills in your CRM with notes and call logs (fireflies.ai).
- A free plan with unlimited transcription and 400 minutes of storage; Pro is $18 per seat a month, or $10 billed yearly (pricing).
How they differ
Fireflies records the call and transcribes it. CaptionSnap records no audio: it keeps the captions your meeting app already shows.
| App | How it gets the words | Uses call audio | Transcripts kept | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fireflies | A bot joins the call; its Chrome extension works without the bot in Google Meet | Yes | Cloud | Free: 400 min of storage. Pro $18/seat/month ($10 billed yearly) |
| CaptionSnap | Saves the captions Teams, Zoom or Google Meet already show | No | Your Mac | $9.99 once |

When CaptionSnap fits
- You want the exact words, with who said them, kept as files on your Mac.
- Your calls are on Teams, Zoom or Google Meet, with captions on.
- You want a transcript without your call's audio being recorded or sent anywhere.
- You'd rather pay once than every month.
When Fireflies fits better
- You want AI summaries and CRM updates. CaptionSnap doesn't write summaries; it keeps the exact words in a plain file that you can paste into any AI tool.
- You want recordings of your calls. CaptionSnap keeps text only.
- Your meeting has no captions, such as one in a room. Fireflies' mobile app records conversations in person; CaptionSnap needs the captions of Teams, Zoom or Google Meet.
